The great thing about a monochromatic design is that you get to delve into the color of your choice.

Above, you can see the (literal) layering of tone on tone: rich blacks on top of velvety charcoals; it’s a game of shadows and light. Notice also the use of texture and pattern to deepen the experience of black. Just because something only has one color doesn’t mean that it lacks sophistication, elegance, playfulness, or interest. Monochromatic designs are dramatic!

Try picking one color, and use variations of that one color (for example, navy blue, sky blue, aqua) in a room. Attend to texture and patterns through pillows, throws, decorative items, and furnishings within your limited palette.

Inventing rules for yourself makes you creative with your resources, and appreciate the richness in your world that might otherwise be unseen.
